Connecticut is a state that I've heard about my whole live because my dad grew up there. I've heard so many times how he would walk to school uphill, both ways, in the snow. As appealing as that sounds, he would boast about how autumn was the best time to go to Connecticut and boy, was he right. When I was in 5th grade, my family took a trip to Connecticut to visit my dad's family. This trip is why autumn became my favorite season. Growing up in southern California, we always talk about how the weather is perfect all the time, but this means we don't get as strong seasons as other areas of the country. To be surrounded by bright yellow trees and trees with orange and red leaves was magical. Just seeing the colorful leaves brightening up the walkways was amazing. Pro-tip from my dad, do not just jump into any large pile of leaves or you might be met with an unsuspecting wasps nest, which can be unpleasant, so I'm told.
One of the coolest things we did when I was in Connecticut was visiting Mark Twain's house. At the time, I had already done a couple book reports on Mark Twain so it meant a lot to see where he lived. Did I read all his books? Nope. Why did I pick him for my reports? I honestly can't remember. Fun fact: Mark Twain was born on November 30, 1835, shortly after the comet's perihelion (closest approach to the sun) in that year. He famously predicted that he would "go out with" the comet as well. True to his prediction, Twain passed away on April 21, 1910, just one day after the comet's subsequent return to perihelion.
The New England area is a perfect place to roadtrip, which is one of the things we did there. We drove up to Maine and saw some amazing things along the way that I will mention in those state's posts, so stay tuned!
